Definition: What Does a Personal Trainer Do?

A personal trainer is a trained fitness professional who guides you physically during your training. They create a training program, correct your technique during sessions, adjust the program based on your progress, and motivate you. A personal trainer is present during your workout.

In the Netherlands, recognized trainings include: Fitness Academy (level 3 or 4), CIOS, MBO Sports & Movement, or international certifications like NASM-CPT or ACE. On Gymies, all trainers are verified with one of these recognized diplomas.

Definition: What Does a Fitness Coach Do?

A fitness coach focuses more on behavior change, motivation, and lifestyle than on physically guiding training. They work more often remotely (online), via check-ins, nutrition advice, and provide programs that you execute independently.

Important: the title fitness coach is not protected in the Netherlands. Anyone can call themselves a fitness coach — even without training. Always ask about your coach's certifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the official difference between a personal trainer and fitness coach?
A personal trainer has recognized sports training and guides you physically during training. A fitness coach has a broader role (behavior, motivation, lifestyle) but is an unprotected title — anyone can call themselves that.
Is a personal trainer or fitness coach more expensive?
A personal trainer is typically slightly more expensive (€45–€95/hr) due to recognized training and hands-on guidance. Online fitness coaches are cheaper but offer less customization.
Can a personal trainer also be a coach?
Absolutely. The best personal trainers combine both roles: they guide you physically during training AND coach you on motivation, nutrition, and recovery. Ask about your trainer's full certification package.

How to Choose the RIGHT Coach for Your Goals?

Choose a personal trainer if: You\'re a beginner, have an injury, specific goals (e.g., lose 10 kg in 3 months), or want someone literally standing next to you. You pay more but results come faster.

Choose a fitness coach if: You already have basic fitness, prefer online work, have a tight budget, and want more focus on motivation/mindset than physical guidance. This works well if you\'re self-motivated.

Ideal: Start with a personal trainer (3-6 months) to build good basics and habits. After that, you can switch to online coaching or train independently.

Why Certification Matters

A certified personal trainer learned research basis, anatomy, biomechanics, and nutrition. A "fitness coach" can be anyone who is fit. This is the difference between someone who helps you reach your goals safely vs. someone applying their experiences to you.

Recognized certifications in NL: Fitness Academy, NASM-CPT, ACE, CIOS. On Gymies, all trainers are verified.
